Next October, Liam will attempt to become the first person with tetraplegia to push himself the full distance up Mount Kilimanjaro. Whilst other people have made the summit with assistance, Liam is planning to self-propel the climb in a specially adapted wheelchair.
Liam, who was injured playing rugby union in 2015, is hoping to raise £50,000 for the RFU Injured Players Foundation (IPF) who have been a source of incredible support for him in the ten years since his accident.
The IPF is England Rugby’s official charity and supports players at any level of the game who have sustained a life-changing injury such as those which result in the loss or use of a limb, catastrophic spinal cord injuries or acute, severe traumatic brain injuries.
As a charity the IPF offers wide-ranging support for players, their families and friends when faced with a life-changing injury. This can include immediate support in hospital ensuring access to the most appropriate medical care as well as emotional, practical and financial assistance, enabling families to focus on supporting their loved one. The IPF is committed to being there for life, or for as long as the player needs. The whole support package is provided to ensure every player has choice, control and is empowered to live the life they wish to lead.
On confirming his challenge Liam commented: “The IPF has given me and my family so much support since my accident and I just wanted to give something back to them and raise awareness of the brilliant work they do.
“It’s going to be a really tough climb – we went up Pen y Fan a few weeks ago, which gave us a small taste of the task in hand and that was pretty hard going. But we have training plans in place and it’s for such a good cause that we’ll prepare ourselves well over the next year – I can’t wait to get going!”
