Tribute to Peter Williams
We are saddened to announce the death of Gloucestershire Rugby Football Union [GRFU] stalwart, Peter Williams. Peter died on Sunday 14th March after a long illness. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Jane and children, Tom and Amy and their families.
Peter was first involved with GRFU through his coaching abilities and became Chairman in 2010; a position he held until 2018. He was subsequently elected as GRFU Vice President and served us well until the end of 2020. Sadly, due to his poor health, Peter decided he could not undertake the duties as our President, an office he richly deserved. However, Peter remained involved with the GRFU Management and Executive Boards until very recently.
He was also extremely active within the RFU, working on the RFU Club Development Sub-Committee and being instrumental in organising very successful Constituent Body Conferences, as well as taking a leading role in the Leadership Academy and Leadership in Union Programmes. Peter’s clear thinking and strategic attitude to everything he undertook, ensured that GRFU was the “go to” Constituent Body for others within the RFU.
During his playing career, Peter was awarded 5 caps by the RAF for inter-service games, the first at the age of 19.
Peter will be sadly missed by us all, both as a friend and colleague. His in-depth knowledge of rugby and innovative working practices meant he was a most valued and respected member of the Rugby Family.
