GRFU Women

Gloucestershire RFU wish to announce that the CB will not be entering the 2021/22 RFU Women’s County Championship scheduled to have been played from May 7th onwards.

The Gloucestershire RFU Executive were approached by the Women’s Team Management on 14/4 following some developments, namely : Only 21 attendees at the First Trial and the unavailability of players from our 3 higher-ranking teams due to 1) Cheltenham Tigers Ladies winning through to the Championship Cup Final and wanting their players for themselves 2) St Mary’s OBs and North Bristol Ladies having had long, tiring but successful League seasons and wanting their players to fully rest ahead of pre-season training.

With GRFU being in the highest tier of the competition against strong opposition it was felt that the development upside for the available players would be negligible and player-welfare/safety potentially compromised due to the playing gulf. The GRFU Executive unanimously supported the proposal on 20/4 and this was unanimously ratified by the GRFU Management Board on 27/4. The RFU organisers and opposition teams were all informed on 21/4 accepting and completely understanding GRFU’s decision. This was not a financial decision at all.

A developmental training session for all initial triallists will take place on 13th May alongside a GRFU meeting with all GRFU Women’s club coaching leads to discuss next season’s competition and programme.

This has not been an easy decision to make especially with Gloucestershire RFU having not entered the 2021/22 Men’s and U20’s competitions but was the only sensible course to take with no time to make alternative arrangements.

The County have successfully participated in all Age-Grade (Boys & Girls) County events this season and hopefully next season will see a return of GRFU to all the developmental and aspirational County Championship competitions.
